Sequoia National Park

Here's another painting in my tent series:
Tent Painting in Sequoia by Kathryn Beals

This is a painting of a rock in an area called Big Five Lakes in Sequoia National Park, California. This area is several days hike from civilization and up around 10,000 feet elevation, so the stars were pretty incredible. We didn't camp on this rock, but I added the blue tent to provide a contrast with the orange sky.

Next are a few detail shots from the painting.
In this painting I got some practice painting reflections, something I've been wanting to get better at. The low light conditions in this scene made for a high contrast between the mountains and the sky. I made the reflection in the water a bit darker than the scene above water, and experimented with the edge definition in the reflected image. My initial tendency was to blend the reflected colors in the water well, making a gradient from the light sky to the dark mountains.

Instead I found that the ripples looked more realistic when I didn't blend the colors at all, instead making very sharp, defined edges on my reflections, going straight from pink to black.

I made the dark shapes of the mountains and the rock in the foreground first, then added a little bit of definition with the transparent
Zinc White to make the reflection clearer. You can see this best in the area beneath the rocks in the foreground.

Here are Travis and I at the lake during the day:
